African American Artist Painting

February 18th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

A painting by a nationally-acclaimed African American artist from Mayfield, is now being sold to benefit a faith based charity.

The original watercolor painting by the late Ellis Wilson, is thought to depict the backyard of his home in Mayfield, where his parents grew hollyhocks.

Wilson was considered a pioneer in African American art, and some of his works are exhibited at major museums, including the Smithsonian Art Museum.

He died in 1977.

Now, the local Wilson painting has been donated by a Fancy Farm couple to raise money for the Mayfield-Graves County Needline and Food Pantry.

Sealed bids are being accepted thru Friday for the painting.
