Buoys To Be Removed at Dams

June 20th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

Cumberland DamThe Army Corps of Engineers has announced their plans to remove buoys below the Cumberland River Dams.

The Corps had placed the buoys to keep fishermen and boaters away from the dams, but lawmakers passed legislation to keep the waters open at all 10 locations.

Tennessee U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander said the Corps announcement was what he called “the right way to end the fishing contrversy”.

Alexander, along with Kentucky lawmakers Senator Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, and Congressman Ed Whitfield, held several meetings with residents and Corps officials about the decision to barricade the waters near the dams.

In the end, the lawmakers “Freedom to Fish Act” was approved for a two year period, nullifying the Corps plan to restrict the area from the public.
