Cardinals Fall to Ranger 2-1

June 24th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

Despite a strong pitching performance by Adam Wainwright, the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Texas Rangers last night 2-1.

In a game that did not start until after 10:00 due to a three hour rain delay, the Cardinals saw themselves swept in a three game series for the first time this season.

Matt Carpenter broke a scoreless tie in the 6th inning, hitting a home run to give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.

In the 7th inning, the Ranger’s Leonys Martin (mar-teen) tied the game with two outs, on an RBI single.

Still with two outs, Redbird shortstop Pete Kozma committed a fielding error, which led to this game winning hit by Ian Kinsler.

Wainwright pitched 6 2/3 inings, allowing only six hits, with six strikeouts, but could not become the first 11 game winner in the Major Leagues.

The Cardinals managed only seven hits on the night, with two each for Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay.

The Redbirds now hold a 1.5 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Central Division, and take the day off today.

St. Louis will begin a two game set in Houston starting tomorrow night.
