April 3rd, 2013 - By Charles Choate

matt hollidayThe St. Louis Cardinals used a strong pitching performance by Jamie Garcia, and the long ball, to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 last night.

The Redbirds broke a 1-1 tie in the 6th inning, when Matt Holliday homered with Jon Jay on first base.

Shortstop Pete Kozma added to the St. Louis lead in the 7th inning, when he connected on a Heath Bell pitch for a solo shot and 4-1 lead.

Following a Shane Robinson walk after Kozma’s homer, Jon Jay secured the first win of the season for the Redbirds, when he drove a pitch off the outfield foul pole for the 6-1 score.

Jamie Garcia held the Diamondbacks to two hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four batters.

The Cardinals will try to win the rubber game of the series tonight, with broadcast time on 1049 KYTN set to start at 7:45.
