Cards Beat Padres 9-6

July 20th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

The St. Louis Cardinals began the second half of their season with a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium.

The night was big for both Matt Carpenter and pitcher Jake Westbrook, who both collected three hits apiece in the game.

Carpenter gave the Redbirds a 2-0 lead in the 5th inning, when he collected a single.

Westbrook doubled the score in the 6th inning, with a 2-RBI hit.

Still in the 6th, Carpenter made the score 6-0 with his third RBI of the game.

In the 7th inning, Yadier Molina drove a double to the outfield wall, adding to the St. Louis lead.

The Padres did manage to score six runs over the last three innings, but closer Edward Mujica ended the game with his 27th save of the year.

The win, coupled with a Pittsburgh loss to the Cincinnati Reds, puts St. Louis on top of the Central Division by 2.0 games.

The Cardinals and Padres will play again tonight at Busch Stadium, with broadcast time on 1049 KYTN set for 5:20.
