Pedro Alvarez – 3-run home run sinks Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their 4th straight game in a row last night in Pittsburgh, one that was over before it really got started.

The Pirates scored four runs in the 1st inning, on the first 10 pitches thrown from Redbird starter Jake Westbrook.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead, when Andrew McCutchen drove in an RBI on a base hit.

The next batter, third baseman Pedro Alvarez, took the National League lead in home runs with his 27th of the year.

The Cardinal bullpen of Marc Rzepcznski and Fernando Salas was not much better in the game, allowing five runs in three innings, including this 2-RBI double by Clint Barmes in the 7th inning.

The loss by St. Louis now gives them a half-game lead in the Central Division over the Pirates, with a double header scheduled today at PNC Park.

You can hear both games today on 1049 KYTN, with our broadcast time for Game 1 starting at 2:10.
