Carpenter Out for Cardinals

February 6th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that star pitcher Chris Carpenter will not be with the team this season, and may be forced into retirement.

During a press conference Tuesday at Busch Stadium, General Manager John Mozeliak and coach Mike Matheny announced that the 37 year old Carpenter was again suffering from the neck injury that caused him to miss most all of last season.

Carpenter had just told media members in mid-January that everything was going well with his off-season workouts, but Mozeliak said bullpen sessions this week in St. Louis brought back the numbness and pain.

Matheny said Carpenter has been very upset with the setback, after hoping to return in full form.

Carpenter was the 2005 Cy Young Award winner and has won 95 games for the Cardinals in his nine-year career.

He is expected to be seen by Cardinal medical staff next week to evaluate the bruising, pain and numbness in the neck and throwing arm.
