Church Member Arrested for Theft

December 8th, 2012 - By Charles Choate

A church member in western Kentucky has been arrested and charged with theft from his place of worship.

McCracken County Sheriff’s reports said 43 year old Edwin Hawes II, of Paducah, contacted the office manager of the Lone Oak Baptist Church on September 20th, regarding financial assistance with his bills and medication.

Reports said Hawes then went to the church to meet with the manager, who was in a meeting, and was told to wait.

Following the meeting, the manager told police that Hawes had left the building, with a bag containing $2,300 in cash and $3,200 in checks discovered missing the next day.

Police now say Hawes may have thrown the money from a bridge into the river after becoming nervous and scared.

He was arrested on a charge of Theft by Unlawful Taking Over $500.
