Former UT-Martin quarterback Derek Carr, of McKenzie, was presented the Tennessee Sports Writers “Football Player of the Year” award this past weekend in Hermitage.

Carr ranked in the Top-10 in the nation in 2012 in categories such as passing yards per game and total passing yards, while leading the Skyhawks to an 8-3 record.

Carr also was the only quarterback, in all of college football last season, to complete seven touchdown passes in a game on two separate occasions.

In his game against Murray State, Carr set a single game NCAA record by completing 42-of-46 passes for 560 yards, and no interceptions.

He will now be part of coach Jason Simpson’s staff, serving this year as an offensive graduate assistant.
