Discussion of Middle School Merger Plan Scheduled for Monday Night

January 30th, 2013 - By Steve James

The possible plan of combing several of the Obion County middle school football teams will be discussed again Monday night.

The proposal first came up in December after Black Oak Elementary had to combine with Ridgemont after non having enough players.

Due to falling participation numbers, several school officials proposed combing the four middle schools, Black Oak, Ridgemont, Hillcrest and Lake Road to form an eighth grade team, a seventh grade team, and a sixth grade team.

School officials said all the middle schools coaches would be involved in some capacity, including Central’s new Coach Kevin Goltra.

The proposal failed three to two in December.

The plan was brought back up at the school board meeting earlier this month and it was decided sixth graders would no longer be eligible to play at any of the middle schools due to concerns with age and maturity level, but no vote was made on the merger.

The topic will be voted on again Monday night at the Board Meeting scheduled for seven o’clock at Hillcrest Elementary School.
