Football banquet

October 31st, 2012 - By Steve James

At the Northwest football officials banquet last night, Union City football official Gene DeArmitt was recognized by the Association for his outstanding contributions. DeArmitt was honored for his leadership among football official crews and for the respect he has earned from Coaches and football players as being one of the Association’s best in the “white cap.”

Meanwhile two area high school football players were recognized for their outstanding achievements. Billy Jenkens of Dyersburg and Joseph Shanks of Union City received scholarship awards. Northwest Football Officials raise money through a golf tournament each year and return those funds to high school students in scholarships.

Dyersburg’s Bart Stowe and Dresden’s Keith Hodge were named Co-Coaches of the Year. Both football coaches have led their teams to the state play offs and have 9 and 1 records. Westview High School was named the recipient of the Jim Cawley Sportsmanship award. Dan Scates accepted the trophy on behalf of Coach Don Coady and the Chargers football team.

Meanwhile, Football official Thomas Wise of Dyersburg was honored for his 50 years of football officiating.

Former NFL player Trey Teague served as guest speaker. Mr. Teague spoke of his playing time at USJ, Tennessee, and in the pros where he was on the Denver Broncos Superbowl team. He credited the influence of his father and USJ head coach Mickey Marley among the most influential men in his life.
