Fraud Arrests of IRS Workers

FraudTwenty-four current, and former employees of the Internal Revenue Service, have been charged with fraud.

U.S. Attorney Edward Stanton III and Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said the fraud of government benefits was more than $250,000.

In a statement made Wednesday, Attorney Stanton said thirteen of the employees made false statements claiming they were unemployed, to obtain unemployment benefits, welfare, food stamps and housing vouchers.

Ten of those charged were from Memphis, with one each from Jackson, Cordova and Southhaven, Mississippi.

Eleven other employees, all from Memphis, were charged with Theft of Property over $1,000, which is a Class D felony.

The report said multiple federal and state agencies were involved with the investigation which led to the arrests.
