Newsome, Butler OVC Accolades

March 5th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

UT-Martin women’s basketball players Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler have been selected to the All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team.

Newsome has also been named the OVC “Player of the Year” and “Defensive Player of the Year” by the leagues coaches and Sports Information Directors.

This is the third time both have been named with first team honors, and the second time for Newsome to capture both the “Player of the Year” and Defensive Player of the Year”.

Newsome is a junior from Millington, who currently ranks 7th in the nation in scoring, with just under 22 points per game.

Butler also scores just under 22 points per game, making UT-Martin the only school in the nation to have two Top-10 scorers.

The former Gibson County High School star still maintains the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a 3-point shot, now at 76, and is the first player in school history to surpass 2,000 points.
