Obion County Merges Middle School Football

February 5th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

By a 5-2 vote, the Obion County School Board has approved a plan to combine four of the system’s middle school football programs.

Black Oak, Ridgemont, Lake Road and Hillcrest will join together this season to form Obion County teams for the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

South Fulton Middle will be the only school to maintain their current operation for football.

Obion Central Athletic Director Craig Rogers spoke on Mix 1013 this morning, and explained that the lack of players was a factor in the decision to bring the teams together.

Rogers said despite combining the schools, he still does not see a large amount players on each squad.

With the merger now comes the question on who will coach the newly formed teams, with Rogers pointing to current staff in the middle schools.

Preliminary indications show some games will now feature both a 7th and 8th grade game on the same night, with 6th graders playing in a different league.

Rogers also said plans call for football players to be bused to Central each day for practice and back to their respective schools.
