Reidland Schools Closed for Threat

December 18th, 2012 - By Charles Choate

A western Kentucky high school and middle school was closed today after police were unable to investigate a threat.

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said Reidland High School and Middle School were forced to close after a reported “serious threat” was sent to the Paducah Sun newspaper office.

Hayden said the decision was made after officials at the Paducah Sun twice denied his request to see the letter, and its authors name and phone number, due to ethical obligations to protect newspaper sources.

The release said newspaper officials did eventually turn over the letter to the McCracken County Attorney’s Office, but would not release the author’s name or contact information.

Hayden said due to the inability to adequately investigate the threat, a meeting with McCracken County’s School Superintendent, and other security officials, resulted in the canceling of classes today.
