Remains Those of Lake County Woman

May 6th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

The body of a woman who disappeared in Lake County in 1982 has now been identified.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department officials informed family members of Annie Mae Hughes, that remains found near Mariana, Arkansas in 1983 were that of their missing relative.

Hughes was 45 years old when she was last seen in a pick-up truck in December of 1982, with L.V. Young.

After the two were reported missing, the pick-up truck was discovered submerged in the Mississippi River at a boat ramp west of Tiptonville almost 40 days later.

Young’s body was discovered with the truck, but Hughes was not found.

It was in 1983 that the remains, which later turned out to be Hughes were discovered, and now identified by DNA.

Although family members have long suspected foul play in the death of Young and Hughes, autopsy results showed the death of Young as “undetermined”.
