Richards Pleads “Not Guilty” to Charges

November 29th, 2012 - By Charles Choate

A Union City man, who pled guilty in Obion County to criminal negligent homicide in 2009, has now pleaded not guilty to new gun charges in western Kentucky.

A Fulton County Court official told KYTN News that 47 year old Ricky Richards entered the not guilty plea to charges of being a Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Richards made the plea to the Class C felony, after an appearance in District Court in front of Judge Hunter Whitesell.

Reports said Richards was arrested during the early morning hours of November 10th in a farming section known as the “lower bottom” north of Hickman.

The arrest by a Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officer was due to Richards possession of a loaded blackpowder rifle during deer season.

Richards pled guilty and served time in jail for the 2008 shooting death of 44 year old former Union City native John Burnett, at the wildlife refuge in Walnut Log.

Burnett was with three other people checking on a duck blind in November, when he was struck by a bullet from a high powered rifle and died days later in Memphis.

Richards will now appear for a preliminary hearing in Fulton County Court on January 8th at 1:30.
