Safety Grant Benefits Union City

October 4th, 2012 - By Charles Choate

Law enforcement officials in Union City say they are excited about grant funds awarded by the Governor’s Highway Traffic Administration.

Interim Police Chief Perry Barfield told KYTN News that the announcement makes the second straight year the local department has received the additional funds to operate.

This year Union City was awarded $40,000, which Barfield said helps in adding additional patrols and checkpoints for seat belt and DUI enforcement.

Barfield said monies were also awarded from the grant to hire Union City Police Lt. Melvin Dowell as a Network Coordinator.

Funds will also be used for equipment, such as video cameras and road block supplies, along with overtime for specific patrol campaigns.
