Skyhawks head to the NCAA tourament. 3/9/2013

U T Martin women claimed another Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball championship title Saturday afternoon defeating Tennessee Tech in over time 87-80. Martin will now advance to the N C A A basketball tournament as the automatic qualifier.

U T Martin and Tech were tied at 73 at the end of regulation before the Skyhawks outscored the Lady Eagles 14 to 7 in the over time in Nashville.

Jasmine Newsome had 34 points to lead the team in scoring while Heather Butler added 24 and Rickiesha Bryant added 20 points in the win.

Head Coach Kevin McMillian was very proud of his team for staying strong while playing three games in three days. 

Jasmine Newsome was excited that she could help her team come out ahead. 

Heather Butler was overjoyed but at the same time not happy that the team was killed with the rebounds. 

Rickiesha Bryant gave it her all and was able to help the team come out ahead in over time. 

U T Martin shot 48 percent from the field and 95 percent from the free throw line completed 18 of 19 free throws in the win,

It will be a week before the team learns its opponent in the first round of the tournament. Martin improved to 18 and 14 overall with the win.

 

 

At the TSSAA girls state basketball tournament in Murfreesboro Union City’s bid for a state championship trophy came up short Saturday when they fell to the state’s number two team Cannon County 48 to 35.

 

Union City, ranked number one in the state, trailed 20 to 16 at the half and 42 to 27 at the end of three and got down by 17 in the fourth but cut the lead to 11 points before losing. Union City finished the season at 32 and 4. The Lady Tornados will return home Sunday afternoon around two o’clock at Union City High School.

 

Coach Eddy Suiter is proud of the effort his team has put forth throughout the season and he knew that it was going to be a hard match going into.

 

Meanwhile the boys TSSAA state tournament begins Wednesday when Lake County will play Watertown with the winner to meet Knoxville Grace Academy or Richland next Friday. In Class A Humboldt will play Mt. Pleasant Thursday morning at 11. In other games of local interest in Class AA Jackson South Side will play Knoxville Fulton Thursday at 6:45.
