Secretary of State on Scam

January 30th, 2013 - By Steve James

The Secretary of State’s Office is still urging business owners to be on the lookout for scam letters asking for money to file annual reports.

The notices are from an entity called “Corporate Records Services” and began arriving in mailboxes last week.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett spoke to WCMT about the letters and said they were first brought to his attention by Representative Andy Holt of Dresden.

Secretary Hargett said the letters ask the business to file their annual reports and mail a check of $125 dollars. Hargett warns residents to not mail the check and don’t fill out the form.

The Secretary said one one of the biggest signs of this being a scam is the fact that the state only charges $20 dollars to file the reports.
