TBI Arrests Former Gibson City Recorder

September 17th, 2013 - By Steve James

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation today arrested the former recorder for the City of Gibson after she was indicted by the Gibson County grand jury yesterday.

Shawanda Taylor West, 41, of Medina, Tenn. was indicted on one count of theft over $10,000, one count of forgery and one count of official misconduct. While working as the city recorder during 2012, West stole city funds from Gibson City Hall. In June of 2012, she was confronted by officers with the Gibson Police Department who found she had cash on her that she had taken from a cash drawer. The 28th Judicial District Attorney General requested TBI to investigate along with the State of Tennessee Comptrollers Division of Municipal Audit. That investigation uncovered that West took cash payments from defendants who were paying traffic citations issued by the Gibson Police Department and dismissing the citations from city court records. She also took cash from the city of Gibson’s Water Department by altering the payment amount on checks to the water department and removing cash from the daily deposits. An audit revealed that she took more than $20,000.

West was booked into the Gibson County Jail on $50,000 bond.
