Tennessee Wheat Possible Record Breaker

May 10th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

wheatThe USDA is reporting that Tennessee farmers who planted winter wheat, may see record production.

A May 1st survey indicated farmers are expecting a crop rated as “excellent”, with projected average yields of 65 bushel per acre, the second highest on record.

If realized, the state’s wheat crop could total almost 31 million bushel, up 43 percent over 2012 numbers.

USDA reports show that farmers planted approximately 550,000 acres of wheat last fall, with 470,000 of those acres used for grain and the remaining 80,000 acres used as cover crop or harvested for hay or silage.
