Tennessee’s Jones understands challenges ahead

July 31st, 2013 - By Steve James

Tennessee coach Butch Jones

has enjoyed an extended honeymoon period in which he has

re-energized the fan base and excited recruits since his December

arrival.

Now comes the hard part.

Tennessee opens preseason camp Friday with an

uncertain quarterback situation, an inexperienced receiving corps

and a defense that statistically ranked among the worst in school

history last year. Five of Tennessee’s first eight games this fall

are against teams ranked ninth or higher in last year’s final Top

25.

This debut season at Tennessee will provide quite a

test for Jones, who has answered every challenge thus far. Jones

has won raves for his outgoing personality and willingness to

engage with the fan base. He has put together one of the top-ranked

2014 recruiting classes.
