Text Scam in Area

January 21st, 2013 - By Steve James

Law Enforcement in the Ken-Tenn area are warning residents to be on the lookout for text messages or emails that offer free gift cards.

Area residents say they have once again been receiving these messages, mostly claiming to be from Walmart and Best Buy. The texts say to click on the web link provided because they have been “randomly selected” to receive a $1,000 gift card.

This type of scam is called “Smishing”, which has capitalized on the growth and use of smart phones.

Authorities warn area residents to never click on links in text messages or emails offering prizes or free products and do not provide personal information to claim prizes or to sign up for free trials.
