Three Dead in Brookport; Paducah Plant Hit

November 18th, 2013 - By Charles Choate

A long moving storm, which produced a tornado in Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois, has left three people dead in Brookport, Illinois.

The tornado first crossed the Mississippi River from Missouri, where it then caused some damage at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, then crossed the Ohio River into Illinois, where it caused the damage that resulted in the fatalities.

The Gaseous Diffusion Plant’s four enrichment production buildings was damaged, as well as the adjacent cooling towers and a nearby electrical switchyard.

The Brookport Bridge, which runs across the river from Paducah to Brookport, is still closed due to reported damage on the Illinois side.

Many emergency officials, volunteers and other organizations have converged in Brookport to begin assisting those affected by the tornado that struck Sunday afternoon.
