West Tennessee National Guard units being honored this weekend

November 2nd, 2012 - By Steve James

Soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard’s 230th Engineer Battalion in Trenton, and the 913th Engineer Company in Union City will be honored in Freedom Salute ceremonies Saturday, Nov. 3, in Martin.

A total of 339 Guardsmen and their families will be recognized during the Saturday program, set to begin at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Martin, 123 University Street. The West Tennessee units returned home in August after a year’s deployment.

Major. Gen. Robert Harris, Assistant Adjutant General, will be on hand to present each soldier with a beautiful, cased American flag, a ceremonial coin, medallion and lapel pin to commemorate their service to their country. National Guard soldiers who have served more than one tour of duty will receive special recognition.

The prestigious Minuteman Statue and a large, framed flag mosaic will also be presented to individuals and organizations or businesses from the two cities for their outstanding support of the units and families during deployment.

Over 27,000 Tennessee Army and Air National Guardsmen have deployed since Sept. 11, 2001.
