First District U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield met with a group of Kentucky coal miners this week, pledging his support to save their jobs.

Whitfield met in Centertown to talk about President Obama’s efforts to eliminate coal production in America.

The Hopkinsville native told those attending that if the President and his administration were committed to making America a magnet for jobs, they would not hike electricity costs in the name of reduced carbon emmissions.

Reports indicate that coal production and usage accounts for only 3.8 percent of all global carbon emissions.

Whitfield is the Chairman of the House Subcommitte on Energy and Power, and said decisions about coal powered plants should be debated in Congress, not by a President determined to make affordable energy a thing of the past.

Currently, the United States is powered by over 42-percent by coal producing plants.
